Coupled-Inductor Technique for Multi-phase VRs
Coupling the output indictors of the multi-phase Buck can reduce the steady-state current ripple while maintaining the same transient response. The conduction losses in the switches can thus be reduced. The air gap in the center leg more evenly distributes the flux, which can reduce the core loss in the center leg. Furthermore, using coupled inductor can greatly improve the dynamic performance. Some new core structures are proposed for the implementation of the multi-phase coupled inductor.
