Method for Making Oriented Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Nano-Composite Membranes

This invention provides a novel method for efficient, facile, and inexpensive fabrication of nanocomposite membranes with oriented single-walled carbon nanotubes. For use as membrane material, carbon nanotubes have shown significant improvement of transport rates. However, for single walled nanotubes to effectively act as a channel in a membrane, the nanotubes must be aligned correctly. Preexisting techniques are expensive, tedious, and limit fabrication to small surface area.
Using this novel filtration technique, the carbon nanotubes configuration is significantly improved to allow rapid transform of a permeate molecule or compound through the membrane. Further, the composite membrane may be configured to allow transport of specific molecules or compounds while preventing others. This new development presents a simple, fast, commercially attractive, and scalable filtration method to prepare oriented carbon nanotube membranes with large surface area.
