Supramolecular Complexes as Photocatalysts for the Production of Hydrogen from Water

This innovative system efficiently uses solar energy from light to effectively produce hydrogen from water. The present invention describes a supramolecular complex comprising a light absorbing metal center capable of capturing light energy and transferring it to chemical energy. This supramolecular complex is a photochemical molecular device. The unique design allows for the modification and optimization of function – allowable by the adjustment of device components for modulated light absorbing abilities. Further, this invention is capable of catalyzing chemical reactions with high efficiency and stability.
