Biodegradable Coating for Frost Protection in Fruit Trees

THE CHALLENGE

Temperate fruit producers face a growing challenge as climate change disrupts normal winter chill patterns and triggers earlier flowering, which leads to damaging spring frost events that can wipe out yields and destabilize annual revenue. Existing frost protection tools rely on costly equipment, heavy labor, and weather dependent performance, while passive options offer inconsistent results and limited control over sensitive bud and bloom development. These constraints create substantial financial risk for growers who must balance operational expenses with unpredictable frost exposure. The industry urgently needs more reliable and resource efficient frost protection technologies that integrate practical orchard management with advanced plant physiology insights to ensure stable production and long-term economic resilience.

OUR SOLUTION

We introduce a cost-effective and environmentally friendly frost protection coating that can be applied directly to fruit tree buds using standard spraying equipment. The biodegradable gel dries into an insulating film that protects the sensitive buds from frost and easily washes off with subsequent rain events. This coating provides growers with a practical and scalable tool to protect their crop. By replacing expensive equipment and resource heavy practices, the coating reduces operational costs while offering consistent protection during frost sensitive periods. Its safe formulation, ease of application with standard orchard tools, and ability to be tailored for different crops position this technology as a commercially attractive and sustainable solution that helps growers stabilize yields and strengthen long term profitability.
